Metamora, Indiana Day Trip Guide: Train Rides, Candy Shops, and Small Town Charm

If you are looking for one of the best small town day trips in Indiana, Metamora deserves a spot at the top of your list. This historic canal town in southeastern Indiana is packed with charming local shops, nostalgic attractions, train rides, homemade sweets, and family-friendly fun that feels refreshingly simple.

We recently spent the day exploring Metamora, Indiana, and it quickly became one of our favorite hidden gems in the state.

Explore the Charming Shops in Metamora, Indiana

One of the best things to do in Metamora is wander through the town’s locally owned shops. Nearly every storefront offers something unique, from handcrafted gifts and antiques to nostalgic toys and locally made treats. The entire town feels cozy and welcoming, making it easy to spend hours exploring at a slower pace.

A standout stop during our visit was The Wooden Melon & Trough Golf. This quirky little shop is full of handcrafted wooden toys, puzzles, games, and vintage-inspired treasures that instantly bring back childhood memories. Outside, visitors can play the famous trough golf course, where golf balls travel through handcrafted wooden tracks and obstacles. It is creative, nostalgic, and genuinely fun for both kids and adults.

Best Sweet Treats in Metamora

No Metamora day trip is complete without stopping for sweets.

We visited Mr. Fudge’s Confectionery for homemade fudge and classic candies, and it smelled incredible the second we walked through the door. We also stopped at Grandma’s Cookie Jar, which may have been one of our favorite places in town. Homemade ice cream, small-town hospitality, and the nostalgic atmosphere made it impossible to leave empty-handed.

For coffee lovers, The Village Smith Coffee Bar & Apothecary is the perfect place to slow down and recharge. Grabbing a warm drink added so much to the relaxed atmosphere of the day.

Ride the Historic Whitewater Valley Railroad

One of the most iconic attractions in Metamora, Indiana is the Whitewater Valley Railroad. Hearing the train whistle echo through town feels like stepping back in time. The historic train station adds so much character to the town, and watching the train roll into Metamora became one of the highlights of our visit.

We also explored the historic mill and canal area, which helps preserve the town’s rich history and makes Metamora feel truly unique compared to many other Indiana small towns.

Circle D Rangers Wild West Gunfight in Metamora

During our visit, the Circle D Rangers came into town for one of their famous Wild West gunfight reenactments. Suddenly the quiet streets filled with cowboys, laughter, and old-fashioned entertainment as visitors gathered to watch the action unfold.

It added so much personality and excitement to the experience, especially for families visiting Metamora with kids.
