🌿 Magical Nature Playgrounds for Kids – Around Indy

If your kids are climbing the walls this summer, it might be time to let them climb trees instead.

Nature playgrounds are one of the best-kept secrets in Indiana—and they’re popping up all over, and we are here for it. These magical spaces are packed with logs, boulders, towers, streams, and plenty of mud—aka everything kids love. The best part? They don’t even realize they’re exercising and problem-solving. They’re just having fun.

Here are some of our favorite spots to unplug and let imaginations run wild:

🌳 1. Flat Fork Creek Park – Fishers, IN

Best for: Big climbers, nature lovers, sledding hills in winter
Why we love it:
Home to an epic, 40-foot treehouse tower you can climb year-round, Flat Fork Creek is a dream for adventurous kids. Wander the wooded trails, splash in the creek, or relax at a picnic table while the kids explore the natural play areas with logs, rocks, and hills.

👉 Tip: Wear water shoes or old sneakers—kids almost always end up wet!

đź›– 2. Treetop Outpost at Conner Prairie – Fishers, IN

Best for: Creative kids and sensory seekers
Why we love it:
Tucked into the trees behind the museum, this multi-level wooden play structure lets kids build, dig, create, and climb. There’s a music wall, nature art tables, a lookout tower, and lots of shade. Access is included with general admission to Conner Prairie.

👉 Bonus: Pack a change of clothes if your kid gets extra inspired in the mud kitchen.

🏞️ 3. Holliday Park – Indianapolis, IN

Best for: Preschoolers and up
Why we love it:
The Holliday Park Nature Center is home to an indoor water table, music of the wetlands exhibit, a beehive for children to check out, and a forest-themed play area. Then, explore the trails behind the nature center to spot deer, turtles, and birds along the White River. There’s also a perfect area at the bottom of the hill for a little creek stomping. Bring water shoes and a towel, and plan on getting wet!

👉 Family tip: Combine your visit with a picnic by the ruins!

đźšś 4. Fishers AgriPark – Fishers, IN

Best for: Hands-on farm fun and animal lovers
Why we love it:
Fishers AgriPark is part playground, part working farm—and 100% fun for kids who love to dig, explore, and get their hands dirty. There’s a natural play area with logs and stumps to climb, plus animals to meet, fields to roam, and even a U-pick vegetable garden in season.

👉 Free & seasonal: Open to the public in summer and early fall—check their hours before heading out!

🌊 5. Eagle Creek Park – Indianapolis, IN

Best for: Big explorers, trail trekkers, and water lovers
Why we love it:
One of the largest city parks in the country, Eagle Creek is a nature playground all on its own – kids can climb logs, skip rocks along the shore, explore forest trails, and check out the Earth Discovery Center. There’s also a seasonal beach and kayak rentals for older kids and teens.

👉 Adventure idea: Try the short hike to the boardwalk area for birdwatching, then cool off near the beach or splash in the creek.

🧺 What to Pack for Nature Play:

  • Water bottles & sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Change of clothes (and shoes!)
  • Old towels or a picnic blanket
  • A simple nature scavenger hunt printable (we’re working on one—stay tuned!)

🌟 Why We Love These Spots:

Nature playgrounds aren’t just great for kids’ bodies—they’re incredible for their brains, too. They inspire creativity, teamwork, and confidence. And honestly? It’s a breath of fresh air for us parents, too.

Let your kids get dirty. Let them build forts. Let them run until their cheeks are pink and their pockets are full of rocks. These are the moments they’ll remember.
